SEPTEMBER 15, 2017 THE CATHOLIC WEEK PAGE 3 ast June I asked all the people of the Archdio- cese of Mobile to plan to pray before the Blessed Sacrament on Oct. 13. Now I renew that call. Oct. 13 will be the 100th anniversary of the last public apparition of Fatima. The ap- paritions of our Mother Mary at Fatima brought, and con- tinues to bring, God’s bless- ings to the people of God.Her message or prayer and repen- tance is as simple as it is pro- found. We often live our lives without opening our hearts to God’s powerful call to “repent and believe!” (Mk 1:15) Prayer is powerful. Jesus has told us that; “I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mk 11:24) “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.” (Mt 18:19) So let us join in prayer as the family of God on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017. To the extent possible, I am asking that there be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Oct. 13 of this year in all churches and chapels of the archdiocese and for all of us to take a moment to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. This anniversary of Fatima gives us a wonderful opportu- nity to observe a historic mo- ment in which all churches and chapels of the archdiocese are asked to join together in prayer through the Exposition of the Holy Eucharist on the same day. This may be the first time in our history that this request has been made of all churches and chapels in our archdiocese. Depending upon local sit- uations, I am asking that there be at least one hour of Expo- sition of the Holy Eucharist in each of our churches and chapels. I am requesting that religious houses observe this anniversary of Fatima with a time of Exposition of the Holy Eucharist as well. Cath- olic high schools and parishes with Catholic schools are also encouraged to allow a time for the students to pray before the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during the school day to the extent that it can be accommodated with school schedules. I am also asking all the people of our archdiocese to take time and to pray before the Blessed Sacrament on Oct. 13. It is my hope that we can each find a time to pray before the Blessed Sacrament that day. For what should we pray? The prayer of the Our Father gives us a great starting point. We should ask God for “our daily bread.”In other words, to pray for the needs in our per- sonal lives and in our world. Let us pray for our world, na- tion, state, communities, fam- ilies, loved ones and ourselves. This is certainly pleasing to God. As Jesus taught us in the Gospel of John: “Whatever you ask in My name, that will Fri., Sep 15 7:00 p.m. Montgomery Catholic Football Game Sat., Sep 16 8:00 a.m. St. Mary Parish, Mobile, Mass for Catholic High School Volleyball Tournament 4:30 p.m. Little Flower Parish, Mobile, Mass and Confirmation Sun., Sep 17 10:30 a.m. Our Lady of Sorrows Mission, Fairford, Mass and Celebration of Feast Day Wed., Sep 20 7:30 a.m. Archdiocesan Finance Council Meeting 1:30 p.m. Presbyteral Council Meeting Thu., Sep 21 8:30 a.m. St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Tillman’s Corner, School Mass and Classroom Visits Sat., Sep 23 10:30 a.m. St. Michael Parish, Auburn, Mass and Confirmation for St. Mary Parish, Opelika 6:30 p.m. St. Monica Parish, Mobile, Mass for the Celebration of the Feast of San Lorenzo with the Catholic-Filipino Community Sun., Sep 24 10:00 a.m. St. Monica Parish, Mobile, Mass and Confirmation Tue., Sep 26 8:30 a.m. St. Patrick Parish, Robertsdale, School Mass and Classroom Visits Wed., Sep 27 8:10 a.m. St. Mary Parish, Mobile, School Mass and Classroom Visits Legatus Society, Mass and Celebration of 10th Anniversary of the Mobile Chapter Thu., Sep 28 8:00 a.m. St. Dominic Parish, Mobile, School Mass and Classroom Visits 6:00 p.m. Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Archangel Mass Fri., Sep 29 12:10 p.m. Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Red Mass for Members of the Legal Profession Sat., Sep 30 5:30 p.m. St. Martin of Tours Parish, Troy, Mass and Confirmation Archbishop’s Schedule September 15 - September 30 Let us join in prayer onOctober 13 FROM THE ARCHBISHOP Most Reverend Thomas J. Rodi L I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.” ( Jn 14:13-14) Let us also remember to pray: “Thy will be done.” So often our prayer is asking for “ My will be done, not Thy will be done.” God’s plans are al- ways better than ours. God’s plans are always for our good. God’s plans are always what is best for us. The miracles of prayers are often not that we get what we ask for but that prayer changes us and makes us willing to open ourselves to God’s will. In this way, prayer brings us closer to God and allows us to trust God and lean on Him for strength. Let us encourage one an- other to join in prayer on this 100th anniversary of the final apparition of Fatima.May this day of archdiocesan obser- vance honor the Immaculate Heart of Mary by honoring her Son, Jesus Christ, who is the Savior of sinners and the hope of salvation. Let this day remind us of our need to pray, to repent, to do penance and to renew our resolve to live in the dignity of the children of God. WJTC-Mobile/Pensacola/Ft.
