Filled boxes and a check for $9 to cover ship- ping/missionary work are then returned to the participating parish/school/diocesan office in November. The participating parish then delivers the boxes to one of six dropoff centers throughout the archdiocese be- tween Nov. 4-12. “Box of Joy” began with a pi- lot year in 2014 and the Archdi- ocese of Mobile participated for the first time in 2015. In 2015 and again in 2016, the generous people of the archdiocese served more than 4,000 children — the most of any diocese. Earlier this year, Cross Cath- olic Outreach offered select me- dia outlets an opportunity to see “Boxes of Joy” being delivered to children in Haiti. “To see the conditions that some in Haiti were living in and then to see the reaction of the children and families who benefitted from the ‘Box of Joy’ program was absolutely over- whelming,” said “The Catholic Week” Editor Rob Herbst, who was part of the media contin- gent that followed Cross Catho- lic Outreach in Haiti in March. “Their appreciation for seem- ingly-small gifts to many of us was truly beautiful to see. Many times we don’t get to witness our charitable gifts making a differ- ence to others, so to be able to see “Boxes of Joy” putting smiles on families’ faces was a blessing. The boxes mean so much to so many.” Those across the U.S., donated 31,712 “Boxes of Joy” last year. “ ‘Box of Joy’ allows all of us in the archdiocese to come together to help bring joy to a child who may have never before received a gift,” said Ja- net Masline, associate director for the archdiocese’s Office for Box From page 1 Photo by Rob Herbst/The Catholic Week Children in Haiti take a look at what is in the “Box of Joy” each received in March. Evangelization and Family Life. “In addition, part of the mon- etary donation with each box helps to provide life-saving pro- grams for the families in these areas. Our donations bring joy not only to the children, but their entire community. “ — For more information on “Box of Joy,” contact Janet Masline at jmasline@mobarch.org or visit www.CrossCatholic.org/BoxofJoy
