The annual event benefits the many ministries of Catholic Social Services of Montgomery. The menu for the evening included baked kibbee (ground meat and spic- es), yubra (stuffed grape leaves), coosa (stuffed squash), lubee (green beans), basmati rice, Lebanese salata (salad), hummus, pita bread, and for dessert - barazik cookie and baklewa. The main courses were prepared by generous do- nors, volunteers and restaurant owners, using recipes of local Lebanese-Ameri- can families. Desserts were ordered from a Middle Eastern bakery in Michigan. ArchbishopThomas J.Rodi was among the guests and guests bid onmore than 200 silent auction items,and anxiously checked the drawdown board to see if their num- ber was still present. John Sadie, one of the many Lebanese Catholics in Montgom- ery, emceed the evening and surprised at- tendees with numerous door prizes. One hour into the drawdown, Kristin Sadie Schwarz led people into a tradi- tional Lebanese dance, the Dabke, that snaked around the tables, adding dancers here and there. More than 50 volunteers, including Boy Scouts from Troop 4 from St Bede Parish in Montgomery, students from MCPS, CSS board members and em- ployees, and many friends of CSS helped by selling tickets, cooking, setting up the room, organizing and displaying the si- lent auction items, serving food and cleaning up. Dan Luehrs, fundraising chairman of the board, said “the volun- teers were amazing during the last three months, preparing for the event and ab- solutely critical to making the event such a wonderful success.” Upcoming events to support Catho- lic Social Services of Montgomery in- clude Italian Home Dinners (distributed through local churches this fall) and the Saints & Sinners Walk and Run in March 2019.
