S.S.E., a native of Selma and director of religious affairs at Xavier University, was named an Underwood Fellow. Sixty-three delegates from around the Diocese of Mobile met in Evergreen to ratify a constitution for a Diocesan Pastoral Council. The meet- ing was chaired by J. Lanaux Marston Jr. Claude M. Hutchinson, a McGill-Toolen Catholic High School senior, was awarded a four-year scholarship to the college of his choice from the National Achievement Scholar- ship Program for Outstanding Students. Michael Brooks and Debo- rah Reese were named co-di- rectors for SEARCH. McGill-Toolen’s golf teams remained undefeated. Varsity team members: Steve Brabner, Andy Burch, John Diamond, Lea Verneuille, and Gerald Drago. Junior Varsity team members: Barry Coonery, Billy Sullivan, Dudley Sanford and Donnie Barry. 25 Years The Vatican and Sony Clas- sical announced the release of “Abba Pater,” the first CD to feature Pope John Paul II deliv- ering messages of faith through live recordings of prayers and homilies blended with original music. The Knights of Columbus district free throw contest was held at the Little Flower School gym in Mobile. The winners: Carrie Cox, Cataline Jaremillo, Brice Johnson, Joseph Zieman, Laura Calloway, Shira Wil- liams, Kara O’Malley, Brett Coleman, Knight Phillip W. Cross was district deputy; Knight H. Malcom Calametti served as chairman; and Knight Paul A. Stewart, served as co- chairman. Kay Allen, Lisa Beasley, Darleen Snyder, Kathy De- Larmi, Dorothy Wagner and Patricia Smith were among the women of Holy Redeemer Par- ish in Eufaula who gathered for a “tea party.” Three second grade stu- dents at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School became “famous puppeteers” among their classmates. Brittany Otis, Joshua Lewis and Delanna Powel designed stick puppets of the characters of “Charlotte’s Web” and entertained HOM students, parents, alumni and business partners during Na- tional Catholic Schools Week. Catholic High School’s boys’ basketball team, under the leadership of Coach Maurice Bailey, concluded an amazing run through the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s class 2A boys’ basketball field with a 63-57 victory over the No.3 ranked Hatton Hornets before more than 7,000 specta- tors at the Birmingham-Jeffer- son Civic Center.
