Walter White and Steve Toomey led the McGill-Toolen Catholic High School Yellow Jackets to a 47-46 basketball win over the Davidson Warriors. A “topping off ” ceremony marked completion of the struc- tural work on Cathedral Place. The Montgomery Jaceyettes, under the leadership of Presi- dent Linda Gafford and Civic Director Jean Hyde, refurbished the playground at St. Jude Catholic Elementary School. Thomas P. Davis, director of student activities for McGill- Toolen Catholic High School led students participating in the Red Cross blood donor day. Dr. David Hall of the Uni- versity of Mississippi conducted a workshop on reading for teachers in the Mobile area Catholic school system. Collins was a profes- sional dancer and choreogra- pher in New York City. 25 Years Fr. John A. Stankiewicz died at the Edmundite Missions House in Selma after a short illness. He was 84 and had been an Edmundite priest for 58 years. Archbishop Oscar H. Lip- scomb issued an invitation to all to join him at the Mobile Civic Center auditorium to “share in an outpouring of praise, thanks and commitment to God and each other to begin a new mil- lennium with a greater love.” Catholic Schools Week was held in the Archdiocese of Mobile. The theme for the cel- ebration was “Catholic Schools: Lighting the Way to a New Century.” It is the 26th annual celebration. Sr. Lourdes Sheehan, RSM, USCCB secretary for educa- tion said, “Lighting the way to a new century theme had a special message for parents. Catholic schools do provide a guiding light for parents who were increasingly concerned that character and values in education play a key role in the curriculum.” Sr. Lourdes was formerly known as Sr. Annunci- ata, RSM, and she served as the last principal of the Convent of Mercy High School in Mobile before its closing in 1968. Members of the 1999-2000 coming home court at McGill- Toolen Catholic High School were seniors William Barial, Daniel Nobles, GregThomp- son and Matt Zwitt; juniors Chip Baugh, Geo Dickinson and Woodie Perkins; sopho- mores Alex Morris and Prentiss Smith; and freshmen Vince Bruner and Matt Guy. Catholics in every parish of the archdiocese joined together in making pledges for the 68th annual Catholic Charities Ap- peal in 2000. The new officers for the St. Mary’s Home Auxiliary: Jean Lewis, president; Dolly Galle, first vice president; Beth Bush, second vice president; Rosa- lie Ankerson, corresponding secretary; Vernice Spotswood, recording secretary; Barbara Hartley, treasurer; and Rose- mary Harrison, historian. The first meeting of the Mercy Medical Foundation, in Mercy’s 50-year history, took place.
