The opening of the door marked the beginning of the Jubilee Year 2000. Rev. Paul G. Zoghby, direc- tor of the 2000 Catholic Chari- ties Appeal, announced a goal of $2.8 million. Last year’s goal was $2.7 million with pledges totaling more than $3.415 mil- lion. The theme for the 2000 Catholic Charities Appeal was “Love Given Forever.” St. Mary Catholic Church parishioners,Tim and Mar- ian Clarke, created a banner to signify the Holy Door at the parish. The banner adorned the door and named the official theme of the Jubilee, “Open Wide the Doors of Christ.” Fr. Peter Cunningham served as pastor. St. Peter the Apostle Par- ish in Chastang celebrated its 100-year anniversary. In recognition of the 100 years of Josephite service to the parish, Mary E. Andry presented Josephite Fr. Superior Gen- eral Robert Kearns, SSJ, with a $500 check for Josephite Manor, a retirement home for Josephite priests and broth- ers. Fr. Kearns came from the Josephite headquarters in Baltimore for the celebration. Catholic Social Services received notification that it had been accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children, Inc. ac- cording to an announcement by Sr. Francis Sheridan, executive director of the organization. Vickie Bolling retired as the lay campus minister at St. Michael Catholic Church in Auburn after eight years. Fr. Frank Sofie was named campus minister with the assistance of Tricia Oliver. Fr. Lorenzo D’Agostino died at the Edmundite Missions House on Jan. 5, 2000 after a prolonged illness.
