PAGE 8 THE CATHOLIC WEEK SEPTEMBER 15, 2017 By ROBHERBST The Catholic Week MOBILE — The Mobile Catholic Scouting Committee is offering youths a chance to en- counter Christ in a fun environ- ment with its upcoming Catholic Cub Adventure. On Oct. 7, boys can take part in events including archery, BB shooting, crafts, camp-fire dem- onstrations, camping demonstra- tions and also earn a religious patch. Registration begins at noon and all activities take place at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Semmes. “It’s a reminder to the parents and kids that Scouting ismeant to have a religious component and is part of the youth ministry of the Catholic Church,” said Mobile Catholic Scouting Committee Chaplain Fr. Stephen Vrazel, pas- tor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. “We want to make sure that re- ligious component is vibrant and good. So we have these events (like Catholic Cub Adventure).” While the event is geared to- ward Cub Scouts associated with Catholic Cub Scout packs in the Archdiocese of Mobile, all boys ages kindergarten through fifth- grade boys as well as younger sib- lings are welcome to attend. Because Catholic Cub Ad- venture is a family event, a parent must also attend. Registration is $10 per child. Supper will be provided follow- ing the 4:45 p.m. Vigil Mass. Catholic Cub Adventure is one of three outreach events hosted by the Mobile Catholic Scouting Committee each year. The Catholic Winter Adven- ture on the second weekend of January is for Boy Scouts to earn merit badges and enrich their faith. The committee will also host the Archbishop’s Dinner on May 19 at Our Savior Catholic Church as Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi will award religious em- blems and patches to Scouts and Scout leaders who have earned them during the academic year. Fr. Vrazel noted the Mobile Catholic Scouting Committee’s events wouldn’t be possible with- out assistance from groups such as the Knights of Columbus. “They support us all the time by serving meals, assisting us fi- nancially, providing food,” Fr. Vrazel said. “They’re a big help.” Fr. Vrazel has a longstand- ing connection with Scouting. He began in Cub Scouts while a student at St. Mary School and became an Eagle Scout in high school. For Fr. Vrazel, many of the skills he learned as a Scout trans- late to today. “So many of the leadership skills I depend upon as a priest are things I picked up in Scout- ing,” Fr. Vrazel said. “And basic Scout craft stuff is stuff I use al- most on a daily basis. … I very much identify with the tenets of the Scout Law (trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.)Those virtues are really very important in life as a Christian as well as a Catholic.” — For more information, con- tact Catholic Cub Adventure Chair Maria Williams, Pack 143-St. Dominic, at 251-463-9266 or springhill43@gmail.com Submitted by ACCW MOBILE — Mrs. Fannie Burden, president of the Mobile Archdiocesan Council of Catho- lic Women, has announced the upcoming convention. The ladies of the Mobile Deanery of the ACCW will host the 82nd an- nual convention onMonday,Oct. 22 - 24 at the Mobile Marriott- Bel Air located at 3101 Airport Blvd.,Mobile, AL 36606.
