Pivonka cited being like the friends of a paralytic in Mark 2. Four men carried a paralytic to see Jesus at Capernaum, but were blocked by a large crowd. Undeterred, they broke open the roof and let down the para- lytic. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” “What is it that prohibits us to getting to Jesus? For these four guys, it was the crowd,” Fr. Pivonka said. “The crowd is al- ways an obstacle. It’s the same thing in our own life. If we’re just going to go along with the crowd, it’s ultimately going to take us to a place where we don’t want to be. The crowd is never going to cheer when we stand up with faith, purpose and in- tegrity. The crowd keeps us from Jesus.” This marked the second Archdiocese of Mobile-spon- sored “Called to Lead,” which takes place every two years as part of the archdiocesan confer- ence series. The biennial “Called to Love” women’s conference is slated for Oct. 6, while “One Faith, One Family” conference will return in 2019. According Pat Arensberg, Director for the Office for Evangelization and Family Life, the conference is vital because men need to be the spiritual leaders of their families. “Our culture is sick and our culture is sick because men aren’t stepping up to the plate,”Arens- berg said. Fr. Pivonka stressed that great change could take place in our society and in ourselves if hearts and minds were open to Jesus’ desires. And if we ex- pected change. “I believe in a God who can change a person’s life in 2-1/2 hours. I believe that we can have an encounter with the Lord this evening and that a year from now, two years from now, four years from now, whatever, we can look back and tell somebody about this encounter that changed (us),” Fr. Pivonka said. “The reason I think often- times we don’t see God do amazing things is because if we’re honest, we don’t expect God to do amazing things. … I suggest that God wants to do something great in our life and we could in fact see the Lord do great things if we expect him to do great things.” Men From page 1 Photo by Rob Herbst/The Catholic Week Fr.
